Built & Borrowed

Group Show, Copeland Gallery, March 2026

Curated by Natasha Caruana

78 percent explores our deep connection with water that is within us, and all around us. It has the capacity to bring us sanitation, survival, destruction, and peace. Deep below us flows the 'lost' River Peck, forced underground by human hands, gurgling and moving, serving as a source of ever-changing collective memory. This work reflects its continual state of flux, with an asynchronous installation of three screens and layered audio, and invites the viewer to step into a more-than-human mode of seeing and listening.

Sounds and visuals were recorded in the River Peck and in the Thames from three different viewpoints: above, at the water’s surface, and submerged. The watergram was created with river water, and the sounds have been extended and imagined with analogue and digital electronics.

This project was made by David Biddlecombe, Zhanyi Shi, Katrina Campbell, Anna Guerra, Eren Guney, Izac Olatunji, Daniel Thomas Freeman, and Sasha Smithie
